CRANBERRY LAKE/FLOWAGE
PLANT MANAGEMENT PLAN COMMITTEE MEETING
JUNE 12, 2010
In attendance were; Ed and Ellen Codner, Kris Waalen, Dick and Rosemary Emanuelson.
There were many topics discussed. We were very lucky because The Cranberry Lake/Flowage Association has accomplished many of the topics discussed.
The next steps:
Conduct a public survey, this survey will help us with our Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Grant.
Steve Schieffers is working on the Watershed Information.
Ellen Codner is putting a link on the Cranberry Lake/Flowage web site; this link will take you to the Wisconsin DNR web site for the Citizen Lake Monitoring Network. On this web site you will be able to see all the ways volunteers make a difference in keeping our lakes clean and beautiful.
Management Goals:
Protect native plant community and fish habitat.
Reduce EWM coverage and limit spread.
Prevent introduction of other invasive species.
Maintain and enhance native shoreline community.
Educate citizens about importance of aquatic plants and lake ecology.
Investigate and then establish funding mechanisms.
Objectives:
Encourage the protection of plants in the littoral zone adjacent to riparian owners. Committee agrees.
Manage AIS with early season methods to allow reduction of target species only and minimal affect on native plants. Committee agrees.
No reduction of native plants species by Lake Association efforts. Committee agrees.
Apply herbicides to all stands > 100 sq.ft. and a mean density >2. Committee agrees.
Monitor EWM in lake and flowage and record any new growth with GPS. A monitoring team will be setup for this. Committees agrees with this and would also like to contact riparian owners, will ask for volunteers at June 19th meeting.
In areas < 100 sq.ft. and /or < mean density of 2, use of SCUBA to hand remove EWM will be utilized. Committee agrees with some questions; can we hire divers? Can we get student divers? Cost of hiring divers?
Place signs at County T bridge to remove plants prior to enter/leaving either side of bridge. Provide receptacles for plant removal. Committee thought this was a good idea however not very practical. Will check with DNR for established practices. Possibility of closing bridge until EWM is under control.
Add education materials to boat landing. Committee thought this could be done, however would these handout become litter?
Distribute annual newsletter with information about AIS and update EWM management. Committee agrees.
Restore one shoreline and use as showcase for others. Committee agrees, and will look for interested parties among riparian owners.
Disseminate educational materials on native shoreline benefits, and educational materials on lake ecology. Committee agrees, and The Association has been handing out pamphlet at the spring and fall sales.
Guest speaker at annual meeting on importance of aquatic plants. Committee agrees however getting a turnout is the problem.
Develop finance committee to evaluate revenue sources. Committee agrees and will ask for volunteers at the June 19th meeting.
Continue annual fundraisers. Committee agrees and will seek new fundraising ideas at the June 19th meeting.
Prepare a file on all of Wisconsin DNR lake grants that are available. Committee agrees and will ask for a volunteer to check with the WI. DNR.
